These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

One thing that very few people know about me is that before becoming a Yoga and Pilates teacher, I was a Hairstylist and Makeup Artist. Yes, it is true. I worked in the beauty industry for over 15 years. I have worked in salons, day spas, cosmetic stores and the cosmetic departments of Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom. I’ve worked for major companies like MAC, Chanel, La Mer, Bobbi Brown, Elemis, Shiseido and more. I also did freelance work as a makeup artist for fashion shows, photo shoots and weddings.

Even to this day, I consider myself a “Beauty Junkie”, particularly with bath and skincare products. You can take the boy out of the beauty department, but you can’t take the beauty department out of the boy. I thought I would start reviewing and sharing some of my favorite products that I have discovered and swear by. So this is the first post in “These Are a Few of My Favorite Things”. These posts will include products I’ve discovered that I love and that add value to my health and wellness in some manner; not just beauty products.

I believe that what we put ON our bodies is just as important as what we put in them or how we move them. I’m always on the hunt for great natural skincare without all the “meanies” in the products such as: synthetic preservatives, synthetic fragrances or toxic chemicals.

Recently, most of the skincare I’ve been using is from Weleda. They “aim to use only the purest ingredients for our products – wild-crafted, organic and Biodynamic®whenever possible”.  Weleda was started in the early 20’s under the idea that our bodies, minds and spirits are all linked in one holistic system. This was groundbreaking and very innovative work at the time. Weleda created skincare and beauty products with natural ingredients to heal our bodies.

One of my favorite products from Weleda is the Skin Food. This product nourishes the skin just like we use good nutrition to nourish our bodies. Skin Food is an ultra rich body cream that uses plant extracts and essential oils to hydrate, restore and protect our skin. Key ingredients of Pansy extract, Sunflower Seed Oil and and Rosemary Leaf Oil help to soothe and heal the skin.

You can literally use this product anywhere on the body: on dry patches like knees and elbows, for the feet and hands, as a lip balm, and even on the face. I personally have used this product everywhere and have had no issues. It seems really rich to maybe apply on the face, but in our harsh New England Winters, your skin can really become painfully dry and a little Skin Food goes a long way to soothing my skin. It’s a thick cream with a pleasing scent that absorbs quickly into the skin and doesn’t leave you feeling greasy.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.
